So here is the distracting thing under the chair that someone pointed out after reading my post yesterday. The thing is a stack of cigarette papers I salvaged from the shuttered Hartera paper mill in Rijeka, Croatia. So here is the thing under the chair up close and personal. And here's a nicer photo of my wrought iron chair, along with its lovely mate in the background.

Mystery solved!
In May 2009, Clarkson Potter will publish my book, The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating with Thrift Shop Treasures, Flea Market Objects, and Vintage Details. Pre-order now on www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com.

thanks for the update. I thought it was a Christmas tree stand or a mini nuclear reactor, so I'm glad to be enlightened. I look forward to seeing what you do with the cigarette papers.
I was lurking in your other blog and was pleased to see what you did with these papers: unloaded them on a friend. Brilliant! I do that sort of thing all the time.
